The Cheshire Cat

Are you familiar with this conversation?

Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don’t much care where.
Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.
Alice: …So long as I get somewhere.
Cheshire Cat: Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.

Leading a Life by Design

Like Alice, some may simply “walk long enough” to get through life.

Not you. You are meant to lead a life by design. For many, this starts with a clearly written personal vision. A personal vision is a common hallmark of the top 2-3% of truly successful leaders.

Your personal vision gives you clear purpose, a life compass, and a picture of where you want to go, what you want to accomplish, and who you want to be. This makes it the best and easiest place to start for leading a life by design.

How to Start Your Vision in Minutes

The most important step is to start. You don’t need to finish, but you can get a long ways by taking the following three steps in the next few minutes. Want to see what impact a personal vision has? Take a bold step, be a doer, and complete these three steps — you’ll be shocked at the impact:

Step 1 – Where Will you Write Your Vision?

Here is a free vision template you can use to define your vision. Or, if you use either the Becoming Your Best Digital or Physical Planner, you have a vision template built into your planner to reference regularly. Whatever option you choose, step one is to put a vision template in front of you.

Step 2 – Start With These Three Roles

We all share three roles: personal, professional, and significant other. Take a moment to write these roles into your vision template. Feel free to modify the role name; e.g., “Professional” to “Manager,” “Director HR,” “CEO,” “Sales,” or “Job.” Modify “Significant Other” to “Relationship,” “Spouse,” “Partner,” “Aspiring Companion,” etc. Personal refers to our mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and even financial well-being. It is the most critical role we have for long-term well-being.

Step 3 – Write Down Your Vision by Role (20 Word or Less)

For each role, write down a short simple sentence that articulates your vision for each role (fewer than 10-20 words) — who you’d like to be, what you’d like to accomplish, and what you’d like to become. It’s okay if it’s not perfect. Just start. Below are some examples we’ve seen, and if you’re stumped, you’re welcome to borrow a vision statement to help you start (and you can modify it later to your liking) — but put something down:

Professional – “I’m among the top 10% (or 1%) in my field.” “I help 1,000’s recover from addiction.” “I help people be happy and become their best.” “I’m a people and HR leader!” “I connect with and inspire people.” “I train the best sales people in the world.”

Personal – “I will play tennis at 90 years old in good mental, physical, financial, and emotional health.” “I maintain a healthy mind, spirit, body, & soul.” “I enjoy and strive for peak health and well-being.”

Significant Other – “I make my partner feel like a 10!” “I’m a loving, kind, supportive, and present companion.” “My relationship is a life-long place of love, comfort, peace, and hope.” “My spouse and I love each other and happily grow old together.” Notice you don’t need to be in a current relationship to have this vision for your future relationship(s).

Bonus Step 4 – Make It Stick

Did you take a moment to start, to write it down? It inspires you doesn’t it?! Want to make your vision stick? Here are a few ideas: share it with a few people you respect and that you are close to. Print a few copies and place it where you’ll regularly see it. Memorize it! And, create a plan to make it a reality. How to create that plan is the topic of the following post. Here’s the link when you’re ready!

Remember, your vision is the easiest and best place to start leading a life by design.
